What Are Your Organization's Data Ethics?

What Are Your Organization's Data Ethics?

Many of the largest technology companies are actually in the business of buying and selling your attention. They want you to engage in their platforms so that you view more advertisements. Since these are some of the largest companies in the world, they can afford to spend a huge amount of money fine-tuning exactly how to increase your engagement.

Now engagement is a tricky thing. You might love cooking or writing poetry. But just because you love those things doesn’t mean that you’ll spend time commenting about them online.

How Do Ethical Concerns Emerge in Computer and Information Science?

You probably interact with technology every day, and with each click, scroll, or search, there are ethical implications.

As our reliance on digital technology grows, so does the need to question and understand the ethical decisions behind it. How should data be used? What limits should companies respect? How should the risks and rewards of technology be balanced?

These questions highlight the ethical concerns that emerge as technology becomes more ingrained in daily life. At the core, these ethical challenges impact how safe, fair, and respectful our digital interactions are.

Identifying Key Ethical Issues in Information Technology

Information technology, or IT, brings with it a range of ethical issues. For instance, think about data privacy—every time you share information online, there’s a question of how that data will be used. Then there’s the issue of security, especially as cyberattacks are becoming more frequent.

But there’s also bias, particularly in algorithms that may unfairly disadvantage certain groups. Additionally, we’re seeing ethical dilemmas in artificial intelligence, where machines are making decisions once left solely to humans.

Each of these areas raises tough questions, not only about what’s possible with technology but also about what’s responsible and respectful to society.

Addressing Data Protection and Privacy Concerns

When it comes to data protection and privacy, the stakes are high. Companies gather immense amounts of information about you—your buying habits, your online activity, even your personal details.

While this data can improve services, it also puts your privacy at risk. Breaches can lead to your personal information falling into the wrong hands, and misuse can lead to data being used in ways you might not approve of.

To address these concerns, many organizations are stepping up their security practices and enforcing stricter data policies.

As a consumer, you play a role too, by staying informed about how your data is being used and what rights you have. Privacy is a right that requires vigilance from both companies and users.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Data Ethics

Artificial intelligence (AI) introduces some of the biggest ethical questions in technology. AI systems can analyze massive amounts of data, often making decisions that impact people’s lives—whether it’s in healthcare, hiring, or even criminal justice.

The issue is that AI is not perfect and can reflect biases present in the data it’s trained on. This raises ethical concerns about fairness and accountability. Who is responsible if an AI makes an unfair decision? How can we ensure that AI respects people’s rights and privacy? These questions are critical because as AI continues to evolve, so does its impact on society.

With the proper checks and balances, AI has the potential to do a lot of good, but without careful oversight, it can create serious ethical issues.

How Can Organizations Adopt Ethical Practices in Science and Technology?

A few years ago Prof. Zeynep Tufekci noticed something interesting when she was watching political videos on YouTube. A simple search for a candidate would lead to video recommendations for conspiracy theories, Holocaust denial and even white supremacy.

But she never viewed or searched for those videos before. They were recommended to her by the algorithm.

She started searching for other content. She noticed that the YouTube algorithm always pushed her toward the most extreme videos. In fact, many of the videos were set to autoplay. That meant that she actually had to turn the video off in order to stop increasingly extreme content.

A search for the flu vaccine would lead to a series of anti-vaccination videos. A simple video on cooking tips would lead to conspiracy theories about how the Titanic never really hit an iceberg.

If you think about this from Google’s perspective, these types of recommendations actually make sense. Think about how thousands of people might drive by a billboard each day without taking a glance. But traffic almost always slows down for an accident on the side of the road.

In general, people are much more engaged with content that is scary, or even unsettling.

So imagine that you’re part of a company that sells vitamins in online stores like Amazon. A customer posted a video review of one of your products. The video talks about how your product was actually developed by extraterrestrials. The pills are really used as a form of interstellar mind control.

The managers in your company want to take down the video. But people are drawn to it because it’s such a strange review. In just a few weeks sales of your product have gone up by 500%.

The data ethics around this are actually a pretty tough call. If you think about it using deontology and Immanuel Kant, then there’s a pretty straightforward answer. Kant thought that you had a categorical imperative to always promote the truth. Your vitamins are not a form of interstellar mind control, so you have a duty to take down the video.

But you could be okay if you look at it through the form of utilitarianism. In fact, that’s how most tech companies like to view this ethical issue. Your company has an obligation to promote free speech and this customer may actually believe these claims. It’s not a bad thing that this is also increasing sales.

In an age where customer’s attention leads to sales, these ethical challenges around engagement will be a big challenge for many organizations.

Ethical Dilemmas with Technology

Ethical concerns in technology are complex and evolving, but with greater awareness and careful action, companies and individuals alike can contribute to a digital world that values fairness, privacy, and responsibility.

This is my weekly newsletter that I call The Deep End because I want to go deeper than results you’ll see from searches or LLMs. Each week I’ll go deep to explain a topic that’s relevant to people who work with technology. I’ll be posting about artificial intelligence, data science, and ethics.

This newsletter is 100% human written 💪 (* aside from a quick run through grammar and spell check).
